MISE-EN-SCENE in a TV Show
Something that can be overlooked in
the realm of producing is a cooking show. One that I have been highly
interested lately is the Great British Baking Show. One thing that really makes
it special is the fine details that go overlooked. Many of the props and background
characteristics make it very comforting and more relaxed, and overall much
better than classic American cooking shows. One thing that is very special
about the show it takes place in a tent in the middle of a beautiful open
field, meaning that most of the lighting in the video comes from the sun.
Another thing that might go overlooked on a cooking show is the acting and
staging due to the fact that it is an unscripted show, however, there are two
hosts on the show that do stick to a script. When introducing each new bake, they
usually have some type of fun joke or phrase about the specific item that the
contestants are about to make. Finally, something that I have noticed that they
do a lot in the show is use spacing and focus to add more detail to the background
commentary. For example, if the narrator of the show is talking about someone’s
previous round bake being bad, they might have the camera pointed at that
person, then pull focus away from them and put it on someone that had a good
bake that same round. I have a lot of appreciation for this show because it is
not one dimensional like many other cooking shows, and they pay very close
attention to detail.
